2001 Heisman Trophy Winner

Eric Crouch

Eric Crouch QB - Nebraska

College Career: In his final year as one of the best option quarterbacks in college football history, Eric Crouch was a leading contender for nearly every major national award, including the Heisman Trophy (Which He Won!), Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player-of-the-Year award, along with the Davey O'Brien quarterback award. However, the individual honors mean little to the Omaha native. Crouch’s team-first approach has been the driving force behind Nebraska’s 11-1 record and No. 4 ranking in the Bowl Championship Series rankings. Perhaps that’s also the reason his teammates chose him one of five Husker captains in 2001, the first NU quarterback to earn the honor in a decade.

In his final year in pursuit of the national title, Crouch has placed his name at the top of the NCAA, Big 12 Conference and Nebraska record books. Most recently, Crouch became the 13th quarterback in NCAA history to rush and pass for more than 1,000 yards in a single season, setting the mark after accounting for a school-record 360 yards of total offense in the Huskers’ loss at No. 14 Colorado. Crouch, who is 35-6 as a starter at NU, also became the Big 12’s total-offense leader, as he now has 7,915 yards of total offense. Just the third quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 3,000 yards and pass for 4,000 yards in his career, Crouch also holds the NU career record with 88 total-offense touchdowns and has pitched in a pair of receiving touchdowns in his career. Crouch already owns the NCAA record for career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 59, and with 18 this season and an NCAA record 20 in 2000, he tied the NCAA mark for most rushing TDs by a quarterback in back-to-back seasons with 38. Against Missouri, Crouch rewrote the Husker record books with his mesmerizing 95-yard scoring run against Missouri, which broke the NU mark for the longest run in school history (94 by Craig Johnson vs. Utah State, 1979; Roger Craig vs. Florida State, 1981). Crouch’s run propelled him to a regular-season school quarterback record 191 yards rushing on the day. With 162 yards on 18 carries at Colorado, Crouch increased his NU and Big 12 quarterback record total to 3,434 career rushing yards, totals that rank fourth on the NCAA all-time quarterback rushing list and fourth on the all-time Big 12 rushing chart.
